Microsoft Scout and Autopilots: Microsoft’s new generation of AI agents

The workplace is evolving rapidly, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is taking on an increasingly active role in how organizations manage tasks, information, and business processes. Until now, most AI systems have been designed to respond to specific prompts or requests. However, the true potential of AI emerges when it can continuously support work, understand priorities, and take action autonomously—while remaining under human oversight.

To address this new reality, Microsoft has introduced a new category of AI agents known as Autopilots. These agents remain continuously active, possess their own digital identity, and can act on behalf of users based on the permissions and policies defined by the organization.

Unlike traditional assistants, Autopilots operate in the background, understand workflows, and carry out actions without requiring constant instructions. With their own digital identity, they can perform tasks within company-defined boundaries, ensuring security, traceability, and compliance.
 

Microsoft Scout: Microsoft’s First Autopilot

At Microsoft Build 2026, Microsoft unveiled Microsoft Scout, the first Autopilot agent designed for the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. Fully integrated into the applications organizations use every day, Scout is built to support users throughout their workday and reduce the effort associated with coordinating and managing tasks.

Microsoft Scout operates across the cloud, desktop, and web, connecting to tools such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, and SharePoint, as well as the data that underpins everyday work, including conversations, emails, calendars, and contacts. Interaction primarily takes place through Microsoft Teams, while additional capabilities can be accessed through the desktop application.
 

What can Microsoft Scout do?

Key capabilities include:

• Scheduling and coordinating meetings across teams working in different time zones;
• Identifying priority meetings and automatically preparing the necessary materials;
• Detecting upcoming deliverables and commitments, reserving time in calendars for focused work;
• Highlighting risks such as stalled decisions or blocked processes before they become obstacles;
• Monitoring priorities and proactively supporting work continuity.

 

Work IQ: contect that evolves with every user

One of Microsoft Scout’s distinguishing features is Work IQ, the intelligence layer that enables it to understand each user’s unique work context. As it interacts with the Microsoft 365 environment, Scout learns patterns, priorities, and processes, becoming increasingly relevant and aligned with the needs of each professional.

This capability allows the agent to track projects, identify dependencies, and contribute to business continuity, even when users are focused on other activities.
 

Enterprise-Grade security and control

Security is one of the core pillars of Microsoft Scout. Each agent operates through its own Microsoft Entra identity rather than shared service accounts. This ensures that every action performed can be attributed to a known and auditable entity within the organization. 

Credentials are protected end-to-end and managed according to the same security standards applied to Microsoft’s native services. In addition, agents can only access resources and execute actions that have been explicitly authorized through the organization’s internal policies. 

For more sensitive operations, human approval can be required before execution. Microsoft Purview data protection policies, including sensitivity labels and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) controls, are applied in real time to help ensure compliance and safeguard information.


Microsoft Scout is currently available as an experimental release through the Frontier program, allowing selected organizations to explore its capabilities and evaluate how it can be integrated into their workflows.

Microsoft plans to gradually expand access to the solution in order to collect feedback and better understand how people adapt to working alongside autonomous, always-on AI agents.
